Best campgrounds in North Coast NSW



NSW is loaded with perfect spots for a weekend away by the ocean (or even a longer stay) and we’ve compiled a list of some of the best beach camping spots. Need a break? Pitch your tent or park your caravan by the water at these favourite national park campgrounds on the NSW North Coast. Spend your lazy days fishing, swimming, walking and whale watching from May to November.





 Trial Bay Gaol campground
Trial Bay Gaol campground is right by the beach and perfect for a family camping holiday. Bring your caravan, motorhome or tent for a weekend of swimming, fishing and fun.

·         All campers must check in to the office on arrival and late arrivals must contact the office during business hours. Fees apply for late check outs.
·         Back Beach campsites may experience some early morning noise from 4am January to April as fishermen gather for marlin season.
·         Mermaid Pools, near this campground, is not recommended for swimming. Large waves wash over the area and visitors can be swept off the rocks.

·         Only 7-night (Saturday to Saturday) block bookings are available during NSW and QLD school holidays
·         Peak season: December, January and school holidays (excluding winter).

·         Off-peak season: Rest of year.





Crowdy Gap campground
A good spot for group camping trips, pitch your tent or park your caravan at Crowdy Gap campground in Crowdy Bay National Park. The beach is just a short walk away.

·         Each campsite has a fire ring with hot plate. 
·         School and not-for-profit groups should book directly with the Port Macquarie NPWS Office on (02) 6588 5555.
·         Food and supplies can be bought in Harrington, about 7km from the campground.

Black Rocks campground
Black Rocks campground is a great place for a family camping holiday, near Evans Head on the NSW north coast.

Doon Goonge campground
The wild terrain rewards you from every angle at Doon Goonge campground near Nymboida. Take a scenic drive, or swim and picnic.

Mungo Brush campground
Mungo Brush campground is a popular place near Hawks Nest on the north coast. Featuring caravan sites, it’s near the beach and the lake; you can go fishing, walking and kayaking.

Rummery Park campground
Base yourself at Rummery Park campground to enjoy the many walking, biking and horse riding trails in Whian Whian State Conservation area and Nightcap National Park.

·         Mobile phone coverage is only available at the signposted sites on Minyon Drive (3.5km east) and Nightcap Range Road (2km south). You'll need to return to these sites to make a booking if you haven't already done so.
·         This is a remote campground, basic supplies are available at nearby Bexhill and Clunes villages, 30 mins away.

·         Goanna Group campsite, the minimum daily rate includes the first 6 adults (16+ yrs) and 18 children (5-15 yrs).





Woody Head campground
Woody Head campground is one of the best places for a weekend getaway camping by the beach. Bring your caravan, camper trailer or tent and don’t forget your fishing rod.
